I have been searching my memory for a day that I ever went hungry. With both joy and sadness I can say I have never been without food for even a day. Some of you may share a different story. Some of you may say you've gone a day, two days, one week or more without something to eat.
I know there are thousands of children and adults that miss a meal each day just in Tennessee. What happened? Why in the United States of America are there people who cannot afford to feed themselves or feed their children? Our store shelves are full, our restaurants throw food out at the end of the day and I myself, have not finished my meal.
It is not only the homeless that are looking for food. It is the family that has someone who lost a job and can't pay the bills. It is the family that gave birth to a special needs child. It is anyone who has had to decide whether to put gas in the tank, medicine in our bodies or food on the table.
It is National Hunger Awareness month. Yes, another organization is having a run or food drive or auction. Awareness; the state of ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events. All I believe anyone can ask is that we all stay AWARE!
Some ideas;
- Carry a bag of apples in your car to pass out to homeless people.
- Buy the two for one at the grocery stores and save the other item for a food collection.
- Carry water bottles in your car to pass out to homeless people (especially in the Summer).
- Volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank sorting food, or volunteer at Hands On Nashville to serve in a soup kitchen.
September is Hunger Action Month , and Second Harvest Food Bank has teamed up with CoolPeopleCare to produce a compelling organic T-shirt. When you buy it, you’ll be providing meals for 44 people. A single T-shirt never did so much.
